Two Russian planes enter Lithuanian airspace, says military - according to TVP World
The two aircraft, an Su-30 fighter and Il-78 refueling tanker, were possibly on a refueling training mission when they violated the border at about 6 p.m. local time (1500 GMT), entering from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and flying about 700 meters into Lithuanian territory, according to the military.
Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon jets from NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled in response and patroled the area, the military added.
Lithuania’s president, Gitanas Nausėda, condemned the breach as a “gross violation of international law,” adding that his country “cannot fail to react,” national broadcaster LRT reported.
He added that the encroachment was the latest in a spate of such actions by Russia.
Lithuania summoned Russia's top diplomat in the country and issued a stern protest, and informed its NATO and European Union allies and the North Atlantic Council about the incident, the Foreign Ministry said.
